Compared with the general population, older adults are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires or falls. Each year, 30 percent of individuals age 65 and older are involved in falls, the leading cause of death from  unintentional injury in that age group.

Neighbors in Action is committed to keeping our older neighbors safe and have teamed up with the La Crescent Fire Department to offer the Remembering When Fire and Fall prevention program. The program consists of group presentations along with home safety visits that teach how to reduce the risks of fire and falls.

Home Safety Visits

Our home safety visits are available to any individual over the age of 65.  At the home visits we will identify risk factors that could lead to fires or falls and offer suggestions to make the home safer. We will also have our ‘Team Handyman’ available to install smoke detectors and safety devices when appropriate.  ‘Team Handyman’ is a group of unpaid volunteers who are experienced at minor household repairs and safety.  Smoke Detectors will be provided free of charge by the American Red Cross.

Call our office at 507-895-5155  to learn about the next group presentation or  sign-up for a home safety visit.
